The Ministry of Tourism has recognised ‘Adventure Tourism’ as a ‘Niche Tourism’ product to promote India as a 365 days’ destination and attract tourists with specific interest. A Task Force on Adventure Tourism has been set up in October 2016 to act as a forum for resolving issues related to development and promotion of Adventure Tourism in the country. It has also been decided to promote 2018 as the ‘Year of Indian Adventure’. Apart from the above, Adventure Tourism is regularly highlighted for promotion as part of the Incredible India Campaign in the print, electronic, online and outdoor media in India and abroad as well as at the various travel trade exhibitions overseas.

Guidelines for adventure tourism already releasedAdventure Tourism recognised as Niche Tourism


Development and promotion of tourism is primarily the responsibility of the State Governments/UTs Administration. However, Ministry of Tourism provides Central Financial Assistance to State Governments/UT Administrations for development of tourism infrastructure which also include Adventure Tourism destinations in the country including Himalayan and Bundelkhand regions under the Swadesh Darshan scheme for Integrated Development of Tourism circuits. The Ministry of Tourism along with the Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) has launched the “Indian Adventure Tourism Guidelines (Version 2.0) – 2018” on 'Safety and Quality Norms for Adventure Tourism in India'. The guidelines list the basic minimum standards for adventure tourism and cover the land, air and water-based activities. All the State Governments/UT Administrations have been advised to adopt and implement these Guidelines in order to minimise the risk associated with such activities and provide a system of search and rescue for tourism activities.

Financial assistance for promoting adventureAdventure Tourism recognised as Niche Tourism


Besides, Government of India, in order to promote adventure activities regularly provides financial assistance to organisations such as Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF), National Adventure Foundation (NAF), Sea Explorer’s Institute under the National Programme for Youth and Adolescent Programme (NPYAD) Scheme to conduct adventure activities including training, awareness camps, seminars, workshops, film/slide shows, exhibition etc. In addition the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling, West Bengal and the Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports, Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir are the other national level institutions who receives regular share grants under the scheme.

Also, to recognise the achievements in the fields of adventure and to provide incentive to the young people for getting exposed to the adventure activities, the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award is conferred every year in the category of Land Adventure, Water Adventure, Air Adventure and Life Time Achievement. The Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) is recognised by the Government of India as the apex body to over see mountaineering activities in the country and to control the expeditions in the mountain peaks with in the geographical territory of the country in consultation with Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs.

More than 14% growth in FTAsAdventure Tourism recognised as Niche Tourism

Meanwhile, India was among one of the highest growing tourist economies in the world in 2017. There was more than 14.0% growth in number of Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) in India in 2017 over 2016 along with a 19.2% increase (in US dollar terms) in the Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEEs) through tourism for the same period. In 2017, Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEEs) through tourism was Rs. 1,77,874 crores. India ranks 26th in the world in arrivals of global tourists. As part of promotional activities Ministry of Tourism has recently released 3 promotional videos through various Social Media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube under the ‘Incredible India 2.0’ brand-line and these videos cumulatively received 67 million views till date.
